This year’s second Great Global Greyhound Walk to be held in the Tri-Cities is moving to Rocky Point Park in Port Moody.

Organizer Louise Walters said she expects at least 69 of the sleek hounds and their people will gather at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at Rocky Point Ice Cream for a stroll along the Inlet that will then return for a celebration of the breed at Parkside Brewery.

Since it started in the United Kingdom 12 years ago with just a handful of dogs, the Great Global Greyhound Walk has spread, of course, around the world, with more than 20,000 dogs and walkers expected to participate in countries like Spain, Australia, the Philippines and even Abu Dhabi.

The walks are organized individually by local volunteers who want to raise awareness and create a community for sighthounds like greyhounds, whippets and afghans. While many of those breeds are more commonly associated with racing, their quiet confidence and gentle demeanour away from competition or after they’re retired make them ideal family pets, Walters said.
