Staff from Save-On-Foods, which has stores in the Tri-Cities, handed over $2.3 million to the B.C. Children’s Hospital during its annual Miracle Weekend telethon last week.

QI DAY

Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities, held its Quality Improvement Day last month with Physician Quality Improvement and Merck Canada. The event helps clinical care staff to identify strategies and solutions.

HEALTHY SCHOOL

Students, teachers and staff at Coquitlam’s Ranch Park elementary last month received the 2018 Health Promoting School Champion title.

BIG BRAIN

Cameron Lee, a student at Coquitlam’s Pinetree secondary school, took part in the Canadian National Brain Bee championships last month in Ontario. Lee, the “Vancouver Brain Bee,” was up against 14 other regional winners who tested on their knowledge of the human brain, neuro-anatomy and patient diagnosis. First place went to Huai-Ying “Ingrid” Huang (London Brain Bee); second place was awarded to Qin Tong Wu (Edmonton); and third to Michael Potemkin (Calgary).

HEARING AID

Windsor Plywood Foundation gave $12,000 last month to the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation last month for its Hearing for Kids program at the Port Moody healthcare institution. The money will be used for to buy specialized hearing aids.

WALK FOR ALS

Last weekend’s Tri-Cities Walk for ALS brought in more than $42,000 for patients living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The ALS Society of BC launched the annual walk from Riverside secondary school in Port Coquitlam.

MUNCH TIME

A program in Coquitlam’s Austin Heights neighbourhood that started two years ago as part of the city’s Coquitlam in Bloom initiative is back. Shoppers can now nibble on herbs, vegetables and fruits in the planters along Austin Avenue for the Coquitlam Munch, which is overseen by the Austin Heights Business Improvement Association. Meanwhile, the BIA will host its annual Daisy Day festival on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. with a pancake breakfast. Visit austinheights.ca/daisy-day.
