A few months ago Tyler Shaw was one of 1,300 people to submit an entry to the MuchMusic Covers Contest 2012.

After Sunday night, he is the last performer standing.

The 19-year-old Coquitlam resident took home the grand prize and will now have an original song produced and released digitally by Sony Music. He will also shoot a video for the song.

The grand prize winner was announced during the MuchMusic Video Awards Sunday night.

"This is now a career," he said. "As soon as I made the top 15 I started to get really serious about it. It has been a hell of a ride and I want it to continue."

Shaw entered the contest with a video of himself singing Invincible by Hedley, which allowed him to advance to the top 15. He also submitted a cover of Rolling in the Deep by Adele to get into the top 10 and his performance of Britney Spears' I Wanna Go helped him into the top three finalists.

Shaw is currently taking sociology at the University of Prince Edward Island, but will be spending the summer at home in Coquitlam.
