Singer-songwriter loop artist Chelsea Laing will return to her roots to help her Port Coquitlam alma mater next week.

Laing, who goes under the stage name Chersea, will perform as part of a year-end show for Must Rock music students at Minnekhada middle school next Thursday.

Chersea is best known for placing in the Top 12 of last year’s Peak Performance Project, a music competition for emerging artists that’s funded by 102.7 The Peak and Music BC.

Must Rock teacher David Erickson said Laing was involved in the Must Rock club as well as band an choir.

“Chelsea has always been a big advocate for Must Rock and was part of it back in the days that it was not yet accepted as a legitimate part of the school music culture,” he said. “Now, I’m happy to say that the years of advocacy from ex-students and university students have paid off and it is part of the regular timetable.”

Laing won’t be the only top name on the ticket.

Whiplash Jack, made up of Rock School students at the nearby Terry Fox secondary, will also be performing.

Ten other sets will come from Must Rock students in grades 6 to 8, playing rock and pop covers and originals (including ukelele songs penned by Ian Marie and Zoe Taylor of the Travellers).

Tickets are $5/$2 (cash only) at the door to the school (1390 Laurier Ave., Port Coquitlam) before 7 p.m. Proceeds will go to the purchase of a student keyboard. Email derickson@sd43.bc.ca.
