The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band clinched seventh overall spot last weekend at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Grade 1 ensemble that includes seven Tri-City musicians claimed eighth position after the March, Strathsprey & Reel contest and seventh place after the Medley last Saturday.

The Grade 1 winner, Field Marshal Montgomery of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, won first in the Medley round and second in the MSR for a final total of 18 points.

Inveraray and District of Inveraray, Scotland, was named the runner-up while St. Laurence O’Toole of Dublin, Ireland, came in third followed by Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia, Scottish Power, and Police Scotland Fife.

The SFU band was one of 21 elite Grade 1 bands — five from Canada — competing at the 2016 Worlds; last year, it placed fifth. The band is managed by Coquitlam’s Rob MacNeil; lead drummer Reid Maxwell is also from Coquitlam.
