Operation Red Nose: $5K raised for Coquitlam sports equipment charity

This charity helps Tri-City kids get involved in local sports. You can help, too, by donating equipment or showing up to the KidSport Tri-Cities Used Sporting Goods Sale in March.

Helping kids get involved in sports, such as field lacrosse, is the goal of KidSport Tri-Cities.

Volunteer drivers with Operation Red Nose (ORN) in Burnaby, New Westminster and Tri-Cities raised more than $5,000 for the charity KidSport Tri-Cities over the 2022 holiday season.

Over seven nights in December 2022, including New Years' Eve, volunteers provided as many as 95 rides, including some as far away as Langley, Maple Ridge and Richmond.

"People in general have not returned to parties and gatherings like they use to. I will say that we are happy with the results," said Jackie Weinkam, ORN chair.

One man even gave $100 during a visit by mascot Rudy to the John B Pub in Coquitlam.

Work is now underway to plan for next year, Weinkam said.

"We are already starting to talk about next year and if there is anyone who would like to join our volunteer group in helping with the organizing of Operation Red Nose you can reach out to us at [email protected]."

Equipment sale March 4

Meanwhile, all hands are on deck to get ready for an upcoming equipment sale in support of KidSport Tri-Cities.

The highly anticipated Used Sporting Goods Sale is set for Saturday, March 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m, at Riverside Secondary School (2215 Reeve St., Port Coquitlam).

Admission is by donation or with an item for the SHARE food bank.

Everything from bikes and hockey gear to fitness equipment and wetsuits will be for sale.

You can outfit a child for hockey — including skates and a helmet — for $10 and for lacrosse for $90 (including a stick and helmet).

All proceeds subsidize kids' sport registration fees for families in financial need.

Used kids sports equipment needed

Families can donate and drop off their gently used sporting goods (in good condition and no older than six years) of any kind from Feb. 22 to March 3 at the following locations:

  • Port Coquitlam Community Centre
  • Port Moody Recreation Complex – front desk
  • Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex – front desk

If you have gently used equipment taking up space in your garage or basement, this is a great opportunity to free up some space, donate the equipment (including bikes) and make a great contribution to the Tri-Cities community.
