Fin speaks out against shark fin imports
New Westminster-Coquitlam MLA Fin Donnelly was on the attack today, launching a petition to stop the import of shark fins to Canada.
The NDP Fisheries and Oceans critic was joined at a Vancouver press conference on Friday by filmmaker Rob Stewart, Sharktruth founder Claudia Li and Chris Harvey-Clark, a UBC marine biologist, to call on the Conservative government for the ban.
In a press release, Donnelly said shark overfishing has resulted in the near-extinction of several species.
"The decline of sharks globally is a conservation crisis that needs immediate attention," he said. "The Canadian government needs to take a leading role in protecting sharks and promoting international ocean stewardship."
