Coquitlam RCMP officers are investigating after a bomb threat was called in to the School District 43 board office Monday morning.

Cpl. Jamie Chung said bomb-sniffing dogs were used to clear the area after the call came in to the Port Moody Police Department at around 11:40 a.m. PoMo police gave the information to Coquitlam RCMP, which is handling the investigation.

"The person mentioned on the phone that there is a bomb in there," Chung said. "I can't disclose any more details."

Chung said that so far, the person who called the police is not considered a suspect. The caller may have been relaying information they had heard from somewhere else, he said.

Police quickly moved into the area — the board of education office is located at 550 Poirier St., next to Centennial secondary school — after the call was made in attempt to secure the building.

"We do take this very seriously," he said. "It is better to take it seriously than to brush it off and have something happen. We treat every call as if there is actually a bomb until proven otherwise."

SD43 spokesperson Cheryl Quinton said she was told the threat was fairly general and the building was not evacuated.

Police and their dogs came through the building and quickly determined that there was no threat to the office.
