'Super seniors' get break on rec passes

Admission to Coquitlam public pools, fitness rooms and skating rinks will go up slightly in April.

Recreation enthusiasts aged 85 years and older will get a break in admission at Coquitlam civic facilities next year.

Starting April 1, 2013, "super seniors" will pay 30% less than their counterparts 84 years and younger to take a dip in a city pool, work out at a rec centre or go for a skate at a local rink.

Joyce Fordyce, Coquitlam's recreation manager, said the new "super senior" designation is intended to encourage older folks to keep fit and to stay social. Delta also has a similar designation for its aging population, she said.

Last week, Coquitlam city council approved the designation along with other 2013 fees and charges, which will see the cost at the Poirier arena, community centres and pools rise slightly for single visits, and monthly and annual passes increase.

The only drop in fees next year is for youths/students wanting to buy a one-year pass to a community centre to workout.

The new rates (not including taxes) are:

ARENA (single visit)

• Child (up to 12 years old): $2.38

• Student/youth (13 to 25 years old with valid student ID): $3.33

• Adult (19 to 64 years old): $4.52

• Senior (65 to 84 years old): $3.33

• Super senior (85 and older): $2.38

COMMUNITY CENTRES (single visit, weight room and fitness)

• Youth/student: $3.81

• Adult: $5.24

• Senior: $3.81

• Super senior: $2.62

INDOOR POOLS & FITNESS CENTRES (single visit)

• Child: $2.86

• Youth/student: $4.29

• Adult: $5.71

• Senior: $4.29

• Super senior: $2.86

• Parent and tot: $2.86 (each)

OUTDOOR POOLS

• All ages: $1.90

Meanwhile, the cost for skate and helmet rentals will increase to $3.10 and $1.90, respectively, while skate sharpening goes up to $4.76 (rentals are free of charge to kids under three).

And as in previous years — as part of a council policy to get kids active — Coquitlam-based youth sports groups will continue to get free rentals for the use of artificial turf, grass and all-weather fields.

New fees and charges also will be applied next year for dog licensing, filming permits and planning documentation, among other things.
