Wheelchair basketball league hoops cash
Organizers with a provincial sports event happening in Coquitlam next year got a gift from the provincial government this month.
The BC Wheelchair Basketball League received a $2,500 Hosting BC grant for its finals that are taking place on March 2 and 3 at Pinetree community centre.
Since the program started, the government has doled out $241,500 in Hosting BC grants for 64 sporting events — such as snowboarding, volleyball, canoeing, sailing, gymnastics and triathlon — in 25 communities; the grants usually range from $3,000 to $15,000, depending on the level of competition.
Of the $2,500 grant, BC Liberal MLA Doug Horne (Coquitlam-Burke Mountain) said in a news release, "This funding is a great way to showcase our city while promoting sport and active lifestyles across the province. I’m pleased we were able to help facilitate such a great event and I look forward to cheering everybody on."
The BC Wheelchair Basketball League provides competitive opportunities for male and female (junior and adult) teams around the province. The participants have a range of disabilities and mobility impairments; the league also features two divisions for different levels of ability and experience.
