Donnelly, NDP start petition opposing Kits closing
New Westminster-Coquitlam MP Fin Donnelly and two New Democrat colleagues have launched a petition calling for the federal government to reconsider its "reckless decision to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station."
Donnelly, the NDP's co-critic for Fisheries, along with Libby Davies (Vancouver East) and Don Davies (Vancouver-Kingsway) have joined forces to drum up support to reinstate the facility closed last week.
"It is irresponsible for the Conservatives to close this base," said Donnelly in a press release. "Marine safety experts as well as Vancouver police and fire services have stated the Conservatives' plan will increase response times and put lives at risk. British Columbians are right to be concerned about their safety."
The release points out the base responded to about 350 calls each year in Canada's busiest port. The petition is online at ndp.ca/savekits.
