Douglas College students want action on missing women
Douglas College students and faculty held a vigil at the Coquitlam campus Thursday, Oct. 3, to demand action in support of missing Aboriginal girls and and women across Canada.
The event was part of a national gathering known as the Sisters in Spirit to raise awareness about the issue and call for a national inquiry to investigate the over 500 reported cases across Canada.
“Violence against Aboriginal women is a national tragedy,” said Madison Paradis-Woodman, college relations coordinator of the Douglas Students’ Union, Local 18 of the Canadian Federation of Students. “Students and community members are calling for the national inquiring not only so families of loved ones can find justice and peace, but to prevent and address systemic racism and violence against Aboriginal women and girls to continue in our country.”
