Coquitlam SAR seeks donations for new truck
Coquitlam Search and Rescue is actively raising money to replace its command vehicle, which the volunteer organization said is not up to the task any longer.
The current truck is 18 years old and although good for its era, isn't heavy enough to carry the necessary cargo such as stretchers, ropes, generators, fuel, batteries, steel rescue equipment and an array of computers.
And with the extra weight comes additional strain on the engine and chassis. Coquitlam SAR says the truck is limited to where it can travel and the speed at which it can go.
"One of the biggest factors in a successful search and rescue task is quick response. As time goes on the chance of successfully reuniting that lost hiker with their family decreases," notes a SAR press release.
The vehicle is also too physically small inside to allow two to three task managers to operate simultaneously.
The proposed new vehicle will cost about $300,000 and should be completed by next June.
To this end, Coquitlam SAR is looking for donations, which can be made in two ways.
• Donate directly to the team online (coquitlam-sar.bc.ca/support-us/) and specify the New Command Truck fund.
• Try to help SAR win an Aviva Community Fund grant. All you need to do is register on the site, search Coquitlam SAR and vote. You can vote daily until the end of the round up to 15 times.
