BYELEX: Michael Bell
Occupation: Toyota Canada warehouse associate
Coquitlam resident: 8 years
Campaign funding: self
Current city committees: none
Council meetings attended this year: none
Michael Bell said he's running for council because he has always had a desire to be in politics. As well, as a father, "you can't tell your children to live their dreams and not do the same. I'm trying to be a role model for them," he said. What makes him different from other candidates is "I'm coming from an everyday person's perspective. I'm a normal, everyday citizen."
On the doorstep, Bell said he's hearing about traffic concerns and red tape at city hall. "It seems to be a slow process."
If elected, Bell plans to make Coquitlam affordable by looking at city expenses "and start really paring back on things we don't need to spend money on," he said. "Be conscientious of the fact that there's people out there that work hard for the money they earn and be respectful of that. And make sure all the decisions are made in the taxpayers' best interest."
As for Riverview's future, Bell said the lands should used as a treatment centre. "I don't want to see it turn into an institution ever again where people are put away and forgotten about."
