PoCo Heritage gets ready for Holiday Tree Festival
Businesses and community groups in Port Coquitlam will be able to start registering for the Centennial Holiday Tree Festival this month in celebration of the city's 100th birthday.
The PoCo Heritage and Cultural Society is organizing the event and hope to get at least 100 entrants into the contest, with the best tree being chosen by residents.
"We are inviting Port Coquitlam's businesses and community groups to enter their holiday trees in a city-wide contest," said Pippa Van Velzen, a member of the society and a festival coordinator. "As this is PoCo's 100th birthday, our goal is to have 100 trees entered."
The contest, she said, is an opportunity for businesses and community groups to show their Christmas spirit and tell their stories through the trees.
Participants can keep their trees at their address or set up a tree at one of the festival's partner sites, which include the PoCo Heritage museum, the Terry Fox Library, the PoCo Recreation Centre or the Leigh Square Community Arts Village.
The deadline for entry is Nov. 15 and the public will have an opportunity to cast their ballot for their favourite tree until Dec. 18. (Residents can vote online at www.placeweave.com/festival or at PoCo Heritage Leigh Square facility).
The fee to enter the contest is $100 for businesses, free for community groups, with all proceeds going to the PoCo Heritage Society.
In return for their participation, entrants will be included in the 5,000 copies of the festival map and calendar, which will be distributed to each of the festival sites. Some of the events at the festival include a Christmas Puppet Show at the Terry Fox Library, a Christmas craft making at Leigh Square and pictures with Santa at the Heritage Museum.
"We are still looking to add more events that fit with the Centennial Holiday Tree Festival theme," said Van Velzen. "So please contact us if your organization has one to include."
