Icy conditions on the Cape Horn interchange this morning prompted Coquitlam RCMP to shut down the busy commuter thoroughfare because of multiple collisions in the area.

Both an onramp and offramp were closed at about 6:30 a.m. Monday after the crashes involving at least 20 vehicles. Even emergency vehicles and tow trucks were struggling on the ice, police said.

There were no serious injuries but police hoped to avoid any further collisions. The interchange was re-opened after the ice had melted at about 9 a.m.

Police are reminding drivers to ensure their vehicles are ready for the road, with good winter tires installed, and to make sure your following distance is double what it would be under normal conditions.
