Coquitlam RCMP issued two violation tickets in a commercial vehicle enforcement blitz Wednesday.

Officers were pulling over heavy trucks on Pinetree Way, near the fire hall, to check loads and whether they were secured properly, the functionality of tires and brakes, and to check inspection reports.

“When the brakes fail on a big truck, it’s a huge problem, or if the steering isn’t good or the tires blow,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin. “This is all meant to prevent that and make trucks safer.”

Wednesday's blitz was part of Coquitlam RCMP’s efforts to step up commercial vehicle enforcement, with plans for more random inspections with the city’s bylaw officers and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement.

Police did 17 inspections and issued seven notice-and-orders, which require a truck driver get an issue fixed immediately or face further fines, McLaughlin said.

Two trucks were taken off the road for a deflated tire and an insufficient tire depth.

“We noticed people are filling out the paperwork for their pre-trip inspections without actually doing the inspections as thoroughly as they need to,” McLaughlin said. “So this is a very good reminder for them.”
