Vegreville, Alta., is one community that has already taken part in the Mural 150 project.

Coquitlam is looking for partners and community groups to lead a mural project in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday this year.

Mural 150 seeks to create 150 murals in 150 communities throughout the country, a project that is intended to engage Canadians from coast-to-coast.

Community organizations are being encouraged to apply for a special Spirit Grant before Monday, July 3, at midnight, with the successful winner being announced on July 31. Proponents will need to identify resources available to lead the project, proposed locations for the final art piece, and the logistics and locations for the mosaic workshops.

Each mural is designed by the artist from Mural Mosaic and represents the theme a community puts forward, but which connects with the theme of the railway. Community painting workshops are organized for volunteers to paint individual tiles which are then incorporated by the artists into the final mural.

So far, 71 communities have participated in the mural project, including 18 cities in B.C.

Interested groups apply for the Spirit Grant, go to www.coquitlam.ca/spiritgrant.
