Under heavy security a huge marijuana shipment from Ontario arrived at YVR today on its way to an East Ladner greenhouse.
Canopy Growth shipped 100,000 tiny plants, known as clones, to the Hornby Drive greenhouse owned by SunSelect, which partnered with Canopy to form a new venture called BC Tweed. Also having a large-scale greenhouse in Langley, Canopy is looking to cash in on the recreational marijuana market when the product is legalized this summer.
The huge Village Farms greenhouse, also in East Ladner, is converting its operation to cannabis as well.
It all spells bad news for the City of Delta, which is concerned valuable farmland used for food production will be lost to pot. Mayor Lois Jackson said the city had been getting several inquiries a week from those interested in setting up cannabis production on farmland. She said pot production should remain in industrial zones.
An order in council from the previous Liberal government in 2001 stripped the city's ability to regulate activities in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
