A Port Coquitlam woman is grieving the loss of her brother and wondering why it took so long for someone to report his van, which was parked in a Burnaby hotel for five months after he went missing.

Last Wednesday, police found found the man and his white van. Foul play is not suspected in his death, according to Coquitlam RCMP, and the case is now in the hands of the coroner.

Samara Ghaffari, who left her job and home in Edmonton to help find her missing brother said the family is traumatized and can't understand why it took so long to find the van.

"There was a press release and it was all over and nobody did anything," she said. "I just got this news three days ago and it's killing me."

Ghaffari-Marandi, 31, a Coquitlam business owner, was last heard from on Nov. 25, 2016. His disappearance was widely reported in the media in December.

A Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson said the van was in an area of the parking lot that isn't very busy, which may explain why it went unreported for so long.

"It wasn't parked illegally or in a way to spark suspicion," Cpl. Mike McLaughlin said.
