Police are investigating and a Port Coquitlam family is struggling to secure a refund from a Coquitlam travel agency that they say bilked them of $30,000.

Raymond Wang said his wife visited the High Street travel agency a couple of weeks ago to get more information about an advertised deal for a package that included a visit to Disneyland and a cruise out of Florida.

He said she gave the agent their credit card and passport information, which was requested to "hold the price" for the vacation. A couple of days later, however, the couple checked their online credit card statement and discovered they'd been billed for $30,000.

After several calls to the travel agency and several promises that the refund would be issued within 48 hours, Wang said he visited the office himself last week and discovered several others who said they were in the same position.

"Some of them had been chasing their money over a couple of years already," Wang said.

After another unsuccessful attempt to get a refund, Wang called the police, who attended later that evening.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Jamie Phillipson said about seven people have filed a complaint with police and investigators are working to determine if there are grounds for theft or fraud charges.

Wang said he was prompted to come forward after hearing from others who also say they've been defrauded by the travel agency.

When contacted by The Tri-City News the Golden Travel Ltd. owner Lily Lau said she was busy and hung up the phone.
