A legendary Vancouver punk rocker is the first candidate to announced he's running for the seat previously held by BC Liberal MLA Doug Horne.

Today (Tuesday), Joe Keithley of DOA confirmed he will seek the nomination for the Green Party to replace Horne.

Horne is currently on the federal campaign trail to fill outgoing Conservative MP James Moore's job.

Keithley is no stranger to politics. He represented the NDP in 2012-’13 when he sought the nomination in Horne's riding of Coquitlam-Burke Mountain (Chris Wilson, now a Coquitlam city councillor, won that race). Keithley also ran under the Green banner in 1996 and 2001 in the now-dissolved riding of Burnaby-Willingdon.

The Burnaby resident said he became a Green Party member in May and, last month, the provincial party asked him to run in Coquitlam-Burke Mountain.

"I know the riding fairly well," he told The Tri-City News. "We are thinking about moving out there and have got some friends on the mountain."

Keithley said he envisions the Greens taking a minority government in the BC Legislature after the next provincial election in 2017.
