Port Moody and Port Coquitlam residents are encouraged to go dark tomorrow night for an hour, turning off all appliances, lights and even electronics to save energy.
Earth Hour is an annual worldwide event promoting energy conservation through private citizens, governments and businesses shutting off power for 60 minutes between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.; this year, it's being held on March 25.
People can sign up online at www.earthhour.org and are encouraged to ask others to shut down for the hour. In 2015, Earth Hour resulted in a savings of 1% of energy use in PoMo and a cut of 15 megawatt hours of electricity in the province.
In 2013, Port Coquitlam residents reduced their energy consumption by 1.9% and the city's plans for 2017 include turning off all non-essential lights and power sources in civic facilities during Earth Hour and powering down city hall's atrium and portico lighting throughout the weekend.
Meanwhile in Coquitlam, non-emergency lights will be turned off at city hall and residents are encouraged to take part in Earth Hour.
