A few Coquitlam district educators 'stressed' to show art: organizer

Hot on the heels of Emerging Talent 18, the juried show of artwork from Grade 12 students, comes another School District 43 exhibit.

But this one doesn't involve teens at all.

Rather, the third Doing & Teaching display that opens on Saturday at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre is a mix of fibre arts, quilting, crafts, ceramics, painting and photography by Tri-City educators.

Organized by Mike McElgunn, the fine arts department head at Gleneagle secondary, the biennial show brings together the talent of some 40 current and retired SD43 teachers as well as teachers-on-call and teachers' aids.

There's even a couple of pieces from a principal: Laurie Birnie of Aspenwood elementary in Port Moody.

McElgunn said participants were invited last year to submit at least two works - but no more than three - for the non-themed exhibit that's being curated by Laryn Van Dyk of the Art Gallery at Evergreen.

And given the diversity of the 100 or so entries, "she'll have her work cut out for her," McElgunn said.

Not all the participants teach (or have taught) art for a living. Many have creative passions they pursue outside of school hours and are happy to share their work in an art gallery; however, there are a few who have been anxious about the public exposure and meeting the deadline.

"Several people are telling me how stressed out they are about putting it out there," McElgunn said, adding, "Now, they know what the students have to go through."

Still, he hopes viewers take away an understanding of the value of art and creativity the educators have in their daily lives - whether it be in the classroom or not.

The opening reception for Doing & Teaching is on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam.
