BC Hydro has added new electric vehicle fast-charging stations in sites in northern B.C. with units now operational in Houston, Fraser Lake, and New Hazelton.

“We are working to make it easier for drivers in B.C. to go electric and take advantage of B.C.’s clean, reliable hydroelectricity,” says Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.

“These new sites along Highway 16 are an important part of expanding the fast-charging network in northern B.C. and brings us closer to reaching our CleanBC goal of completing B.C.’s Electric Highway.”

Each site includes two 50 kilowatt charging units and can add 50 kilometers of driving to an average electric vehicle in about 10 minutes.

The New Hazelton site is now the most northern location within the provincial network.

“Accessibility and safety were critical factors in building the new sites, including the site in New Hazelton,” says Nathan Cullen, MLA for Stikine. “The sites are wheelchair accessible and newly installed lighting will enhance safety for all users. Plus, the New Hazelton site is right in the middle of the community with easy access to Highway 16 means it will be used by residents and visitors alike.”

The Fraser Lake site is one of three in the province that can accommodate large electric trucks and trailers because of its “pull-through” design. The other two are in Powell River and Lillooet.

“As the primary fuel supplier for electric vehicles, we are building out charging infrastructure to ensure we can accommodate the volume and variety of electric vehicles that will be on B.C. roads in the coming years,” says Chris O’Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro. “BC Hydro will add 325 charging units to its network at 145 sites within the next five years.”

In New Hazelton the station is located at 4565 10th Ave, in Fraser Lake the station is located at the Fraser Lake Shopping Centre at 111 Chowsunket Street and in Houston the station is located in the parking lot behind 3487 Ninth Street.
