Coquitlam is looking for local residents interested in being a host to sell their unwanted household items or treasures.

The city is hosting a community garage sale later this month as part of the municipality's efforts to reduce waste and support the environment, as well as encourage recycling and material recovery — all goals listed in Coquitlam's Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP), finalized back in January.

This week is the last to register a home for one of two dates:

  • Sept. 24 = 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sept. 25 = 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Interested participants have until next Sunday (Sept. 11) to sign up their home as a spot to either sell or giveaway items to local treasure and bargain hunters.

"The City expanded the event to a full weekend in recent years, and now includes a giveaway component to help residents sell and give away unwanted but still usable household and personal items, preventing them from going to the landfill," explains Coquitlam environment manager Caresse Selk in a release.

"Since 2014, the successful event has seen a consistent number of registered households every year with over 1,200 registered participants in total."

Selk calls the initiative an inexpensive way to keep household items in good condition out of landfills.

However, any remaining unwanted items from the weekend garage sale are recommended to be taken to local recycling stations for proper disposal.

This includes the new United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre that officially opened March 14, and is 2.5 times larger than its predecessor.

Coquitlam's garage sale is open to single-family and duplex homes, as well as multi-family homes with the approval of the property owner, property manager or Strata.

You can book online or in-person at the city hall via the engineering and public works department (3000 Guildford Way), which is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
