A Richmond non-profit has recently filled its key leadership position.

The Rotary Club of Richmond hosted a ceremony last Wednesday to celebrate the appointment of Suna Yee as the new president.

However, Yee doesn’t just see herself as a leader but also a “Rotarian,” whose mission is to assess the needs of the community, to raise the awareness of the power of lifting others and serve people in need, just like millions of other Rotarians from Rotary International.

“I had been looking for a platform to help seniors, the young generation and the vulnerable. I knew exactly what my heart wanted during that time, but I didn’t know where to start,” said Yee.

Then an opportunity came for Yee, when she met a Rotarian who invited her to their annual Christmas event.

“I knew this was meant for me when I stepped into the Rotary for the first time,” said Yee.

Since then, Yee has been attending leadership training workshops, mentoring youth through a variety of projects and helping fundraise for the Rotary’s “End Polio Now” campaign, which has been running for the last 35 years.

Millions of Rotarians worldwide have been helping to reduce polio cases through raising money to protect nearly three billion children in 122 countries from the paralyzing disease.

As a successful entrepreneur, Yee has been juggling multiple roles over the years, but still manages to put her Rotary work to the top of the list.

“Sometimes I rejected my own businesses to make time for charity,” confessed Yee.

“Many people might decide to be a volunteer once they retire. But life is too short and full of expectations. I want to spend all my leisure time doing something good for society when I am still energetic.”

Yee is busy working with other Rotarians to roll out other projects this year, such as raising funds through launching table tennis tournaments to installing outdoor table tennis tables in city parks and fundraising for Richmond’s Christmas Fund.

“If you are passionate about being part of a better world, then you could come to our Rotary and we could help you get there. Part of being a person is about helping others,” said Yee.
