'This is not an ideal way to end our school year'

Students across southwest B.C., including Whistler and the rest of the Sea to Sky corridor, are kickstarting summer a couple of days early as schools close due to the ongoing heatwave.

Students in the Sea to Sky corridor are getting a head start on their summer break.

Sea to Sky school district (SD48) superintendent Lisa McCullough informed parents on Sunday that schools will be closed the following day, on Monday, June 28, due to the ongoing heat warning in effect for Whistler and much of B.C.

"Temperatures are now anticipated to exceed original weather predictions. The school district’s ability to keep all students and staff in reasonable conditions varies from site to site yet remains very challenging in all buildings," the notice reads.

In addition to the school closures, school bus transportation is cancelled. Though parents and caregivers are asked to keep children home, staff will remain on site for those unable to make alternative arrangements for their children or who must visit school for an urgent reason.

SD48 is following in the footsteps of several other districts across the Lower Mainland that are also opting to cancel classes and keep school doors shut Monday.

The district's plans for the last day of school, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 29th, have also changed.

Schools will open in the morning at their usual start times for students who need to pick up work or personal belongings, while busses will follow their usual morning pick-up schedule in order to provide all students with access to school. However, schools' closing times and busses' departure times will be adjusted.

"This is not an ideal way to end our school year," McCullough wrote. "We apologize for the inconveniences this will cause."
