Stormy weather: Vancouver forecast includes risk of thunderstorms, rainfall and wind warnings

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for the region due to strong winds that may cause damage. 

A low-pressure centre is moving across southern Vancouver Island this evening and into the southern interior overnight,  the federal weather forecaster notes in a news release. 

Ahead of the low, winds are expected to rise up to southerly 50 to 70 km/h over southwestern sections of Metro Vancouver this evening and then shift to westerly 50 to 70 km/h as the low tracks to the east of the city.

The strongest winds are expected to be southerly 70 km/h in the Boundary Bay area this evening before switching to westerly 70 km/h over the areas of Metro Vancouver adjacent to the Strait of Georgia.

Environment Canada adds that "Damage to buildings, such as roof shingles and windows, may occur."

The forecast also calls for a risk of thunderstorms in the city, too. 

The winds are forecast to ease by early Wednesday morning.

The wind warning is in effect for:

  • Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta

Rainfall Warning 

A rainfall warning is also in effect for the Howe Sound, the North Shore, and northeastern Metro Vancouver.

Periods of heavy will continue tonight in the area will an "additional 30 to 40 mm expected through the early overnight period."

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
