Active outbreaks at a long-term care centre in Coquitlam and Port Moody have seen little growth in new cases over the last week.

At The Madison Care Centre in Coquitlam, an outbreak declared Jan. 3 has infected a total of 18 people, on par with a BC Centre for Disease Control outbreak report from last week. One new death, however, has been added to the facility’s total, bringing the number of people who have succumbed to the virus to six.

In Port Moody, meanwhile, Eagle Ridge Manor long-term care home has seen its caseload grow by only one case over the last week. The home now has reported a total of three COVID-19 cases since an outbreak was declared Jan. 13.

When asked how the roll-out of vaccines in long-term care would impact active outbreaks, a spokesperson from Fraser Health described the recent decline in the number of outbreaks in long term care facilities as “very encouraging.”

“We continue to work with Madison and Eagle Ridge Manor support the implementation of enhanced control measures and protect the health of all staff, residents and families,” wrote the spokesperson in an email.

On Friday, Health Minister Adrian Dix said administering second doses for those in long-term care is a priority and “very important.” Others still battling an infection will receive their first dose once they have recovered, added provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

There are currently 14 active outbreaks in acute and long-term care facilities across Fraser Health, the province’s largest health authority by population.

Note, there is no active outbreak at Port Coquitlam's Hawthorne seniors home as indicated on the map.
