A note to Tri-City News readers:

Effective today, The Tri-City News is discontinuing use of the Disqus commenting system under the stories on our website.

The decision to make this change has been discussed and debated for many months both internally and with senior editorial management of Glacier Media, The Tri-City News' parent company.

The two key issues behind this decision are this:

Facebook is where the online discussion is happening regarding our stories; in fact, there are thousands more people engaging on The Tri-City News' Facebook page each week than do so on our website using Disqus.

Facebook requires people to use their real names when commenting while Disqus does not, and the overwhelming majority of people commenting on our stories using the latter do so anonymously.

For our readers who don't use Facebook or who would rather not comment on our Facebook page, we encourage you to send letters to the editor to newsroom@tricitynews.com (including your name, home address and phone number) or to submit them at tricitynews.com/opinion/submit-a-letter-to-the-editor.
