A Coquitlam RCMP officer escaped his vehicle with minor injuries after he lost control of his cruiser and smashed into a Hydro pole in Port Coquitlam Sunday.

The Aug. 9 incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. at the corner of Apel Drive and Coast Meridian Road and involved no other vehicles or pedestrians.

The officer was in the midst of an “emergency response” after a fellow RCMP officer put in a call for help nearby.

“[It] escalated and someone began wrestling with one of our police officers,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

A collision team was called to assess the cause of the crash but there are still no answers.

The officer is expected to make a full recovery, while damage to the car was reported as “extensive.”
