Coquitlam is telling its residents to “hold the phone” if someone calls saying there’s something wrong or testing is happening on their drinking water because it’s likely a scam.

The city has received complaints from residents who have received an automated call about their drinking water. The city, in a press release, said it “never uses automated phoning to contact you or to notify you about projects in your area.”

The release suggested if residents want to find out about the latest projects the legitimate ones can be found in the City Page in The Tri-City News and online at coquitlam.ca/city-services/online-services/social-media. Residents are also encouraged to follow the city’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Anyone receiving a similar call can email the city’s engineering and public works at epw@coquitlam.ca or by calling 604-927-3500.

The city advised against responding to unsolicited email or phone requests for private information, and not to provide any personal information just because it’s being asked.

“Always ask why the information is needed and if you don’t think it’s legitimate then don’t provide it,” said the release.

Possible scams can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and to the Coquitlam RCMP’s non-emergency line, 604-945-1550.
