This week, Coquitlam’s crime hot spot is a neighborhood in southwest Coquitlam where thieves have been active.

According to the report published online Thursday, criminal activity has been taking place in a neighborhood defined by North Road in the west to Walker Street in the east, and from Austin Avenue in the north to Edgar Avenue in the south.

It’s a quiet neighborhood of nice homes with a busy commercial zone along North Road.

But the area has seen a spate of break-ins at residences and theft from vehicles, the report states.

To combat crime, people are encouraged to join the local Block Watch group and report suspicious activity. Calling 604-945-1550 for non-emergencies and 911 for emergencies is recommended. Both lines are staffed 24/7.

To stop home break-ins, make your home visible from the street so criminals have nowhere to hide and do not hide spare keys outside your home, Coquitlam RCMP recommend. It’s best to keep records of your valuables to help police identify your property if it is stolen.

Vehicle crime can be reduced by removing all valuables, including garage door openers, using an anti-theft device and parking in well-lit, well-populated areas where “natural surveillance” can serve as a deterrent.
