Got gear? Donate it to KidSport used equipment sale

If it helps get people active, it's considered sporting equipment, says Chris Wilson, the organizer of the bi-annual KidSport used equipment sale that is being held Sept. 7 at the Poirier Forum. Donations of used equipment are being collected at the Port Moody Rec Centre and Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex beginning Aug. 28 until Sept. 6.

There’s no more reliable sign the seasons are changing than when lacrosse sticks and baseball bats are being packed away in the garage while hockey skates are sharpened and soccer balls inflated.

Which makes it the perfect time for the fall edition of the KidSport Tri-Cities' used equipment sale, to be held Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Poirier Forum in Coquitlam (618 Poirier St.).

All the money raised from the event, which also has a spring incarnation, goes to KidSport to help low-income families offset some of the costs of their kids’ sporting activities, including registration fees and equipment.

The sale is also an opportunity for families with growing young athletes, or those with changing interests, to give new life to sporting gear that has become too small or has been cast into storage.

That gear can range from fishing rods to cricket bats, from tap dancing shoes to kites, a unicycle and more than 200 bicycles. If it helps people be active, it’s a sporting good, said the sale’s organizer, KidSport executive director Chris Wilson.

Donations for this year’s sale can be dropped off at the Port Moody rec centre and the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex until the eve of the sale, Sept. 6. For more information, go to kidsportcanada.ca and look for the Tri-Cities link.
