Heavy rainfall warning for Coquitlam: Environment Canada

An unseasonable rain storm is forecast to dump 25 to 30 mm of precipitation overnight Thursday and into Friday

Environment Canada has issued a special weather alert for Coquitlam as heavy rainfall approaches the Tri-Cities overnight Thursday, Aug. 1.

The unseasonably strong frontal system coming off the Pacific is expected to tap into the subtropical moisture of a warm, wet system coming up from the south.

The resulting rainfall is forecast to dump 25 to 30 mm of rain overnight Thursday and into Friday, according to the Weather Network.

Environment Canada says it's uncertain where the heaviest rain will occur. Special weather statements have also been issued for Howe Sound, inland and west Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver and Whistler.

Continuous rain will end overnight Thursday or early Friday as the front pushes east, with forecasters calling for showers or the risk of thunderstorms and gusty winds heading into the long weekend.

In some places across Vancouver Island and the B.C. south coast, up to 100 mm of rainfall could accumulate overnight. That volume of rain is unusual for this time of year, and could mean some areas will receive more than their entire average August rainfall in the first few days of the month.
