A Coquitlam dentist is giving away thousands of medical masks and gloves to two Tri-City care homes to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Zhi Chung Song said he does not have a lot of use for the personal protection equipment after his business closed because of the novel coronavirus. He added the masks and gloves, which have been in short supply during the crisis, can be put to better use by health care workers.

“They need the masks very badly,” he told The Tri-City News Monday. “I think every Canadian would do the same thing now. You encourage people to do what they can do.”

Song, who is originally from Qingdao, China, gave the masks to the Astoria Retirement Residence in Port Coquitlam and Dufferin Care Centre in Coquitlam. A staff person at Dufferin was recently sent home to self-isolate after testing positive for COVID-19.

Song has operated his Glen Drive dental practice for eight years and said the pandemic has been hard on some of his clients. He is still doing consultations online and answering questions on social media but can only see patients on an emergency basis.

He is looking forward to getting back to work, he said, but has no idea when he will be able to do so.

“I am waiting the government to give us guidance,” he said. “I hope maybe in a month but I don’t know. I have no idea.”
