Pickup packages at Coquitlam Centre

As more people shop online this holiday season, package delivery company sets up mobile pickup spot in the Tri-Cities

Online shoppers in the Tri-Cities may not be able to avoid the mall entirely this holiday season.

A Purolator Mobile Quick Stop truck has setup shop at Coquitlam Centre near Kin's Farm Market between Lincoln SkyTrain station and H&M to make picking up parcels easier during the Christmas shopping rush.

Laurie Weston, a spokesperson for the company, said more than 280 packages were picked up in the first week of operation and many customers are shipping their items directly to the truck.

The pickup point will "help meet the growing demand of consumers' online shopping and shipping preferences and help them save time this busy holiday season," she said.

Weston added that during the week of Cyber Monday the shipping service expected to deliver one million packages per day. She said that the mobile pickup opportunities helped consumers get their parcels quicker.

The Coquitlam truck is just one of four in the Lower Mainland and one of ten across Canada. Other locations in the region include Richmond, Vancouver and Burnaby.

To determine the location, Purolator said it examined shipment volumes and traffic at its retail stores along with population densities across Canada. The company added that it plans on expanding the mobile operations in the new year.

“Purolator picks up and delivers more than 10 million packages across Canada during the holidays,” said Purolator president and CEO John Ferguson in a press release. He added that the trucks save time for consumers and "unlock new potential for online retailers and businesses, helping them get their products to city centres quickly and efficiently.”
