Updated public health orders from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry means facilities that operate yoga, Zumba and barre programs must suspend operations immediately until guidelines for their reopening can be devised.

A day after some fitness programs at Port Moody’s recreation complex were set to resume, they’ve been cancelled again.

The reversal affects low-intensity fitness programs, such as yoga, Zumba and barre, as well as sport and dance programs for school-age children. It’s in response to more detailed public health orders issued Monday by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

The new orders mean any venues that organize or operate indoor physical activities, like gymnastics, dance, martial arts, yoga, plates, strength and conditioning as well as cheerleading, must suspend those activities while the health officer prepares new guidelines that would allow them to reopen.

On Nov. 19, Henry announced a series of stricter orders to be applied across the province until at least Dec. 7 in an effort to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 through social interactions and travel. They included a ban on any community-based gatherings and events, social gatherings, and high-intensity indoor group physical activities like spin classes, hot yoga and interval training.

Programs at the Port Moody rec complex like skating lessons, outdoor boot camp and kids activities such as science, art and theatre are not affected by the latest orders and are scheduled to resume over the next week.

The arenas, weight room and early learners outdoor play school also remain open, although with safety protocols and some restrictions in place.

On Nov. 30, the city will also reopen the walking track as well as the indoor sports courts for pickleball and badminton; however, play for the racquet sports is restricted to singles only, with just two players allowed per court.
