Just in time for the spring sports season, Port Moody Police Department is making it easier for volunteer coaches and others needing record checks to get them by putting the application process online.

Beginning today (Feb. 21), individuals seeking police information checks (PIC) or vulnerable sector screening (PIC-VS) must apply here.

The online system will be used to process all PICS, according to Sgt. Brad Sheridan of Port Moody Police, who said the online process should make it easier for people to get their checks quickly and efficiently because they won’t have to go to the police department to do the paperwork.

“We hope that the timing of this change will immediately benefit those who are looking to be involved in some of the many upcoming spring and summer volunteer opportunities,” Sheridan said in a press release.

A PIC is often required when people are volunteering with an organization or applying for jobs for some companies, and a link to the PIC process can be found on at portmoodypolice.ca.

A PIC includes a review of warrants, outstanding charges and convictions while the PIC-VS process includes an additional screening for those who will be volunteering or woking in a position of trust relative to a vulnerable person. It involves a query of sex offences for which a record suspension (formerly known as a pardon) has been granted and the process is conducted in compliance with the Criminal Records Act.

PMPD requires the position to be one of trust or authority towards a child or vulnerable person to do a vulnerable sector screening.
