Snow clearing a priority at schools

School District 43 is monitoring the weather to determine whether schools should open tomorrow, Wednesday
Snow day
Centennial secondary Grade 12 students turned up at their school Tuesday to make a snowman to welcome students and staff. Tuesday, School District 43 shut down schools because of inclement weather, giving students a snow day.

It looks like the north pole at a number of School District 43 schools but officials say snow clearing is underway in an effort to prepare schools for a possible Wednesday opening.

Today, Tuesday, as many as 32,000 students had the day off school because roads and sidewalks were clogged with snow.

"District Maintenance staff have been working hard all day and will continue to make every effort to prepare our schools to be open tomorrow. As you likely know, the forecast is for some continued snow and staff will continue to monitor the situation through the evening and overnight," communications manger Ken Hoff told the Tri-City News in an email.

Hoff said officials will decide early Wednesday morning to determine whether schools should open for students and staff with information posted to the website by 6:30 a.m. in addition to Twitter, Facebook and other local news outlets.

However, even if schools open, parents and caregivers should take extra precautions driving or walking near school grounds and be appropriately dressed for the weather.

"Of course any time we experience a weather event that is out of the ordinary, it is important to exercise caution whether we are on foot or in vehicles and this is especially true around schools," Hoff noted.

According to Environment Canada, periods of snow will continue overnight, with skies clearing Wednesday morning.
