Tri-City MLAs sworn into office — virtually

Premier John Horgan is set to announce cabinet positions today (Thursday).

The four MLAs elected by Tri-City voters last month were sworn into the Legislature — virtually — this week.

Retired MP Fin Donnelly, a former Coquitlam city councillor, joins incumbent provincial representatives Mike Farnworth (Port Coquitlam); Selina Robinson (Coquitlam-Maillardville); and Rick Glumac (Port Moody-Coquitlam).

The new caucus is the largest ever for the New Democrats, with 57 members sworn into the 42nd Parliament.

“I’m honoured to be part of a great team representing the Tri-Cities in the BC Legislature,” said Donnelly, MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, who replaced BC Liberal Joan Isaacs. “I look forward to working together to help British Columbia make it through and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, combat climate change, and continue building a province that leaves no one behind.”

According to Elections BC, the final count, as of Nov. 17, saw the following results:

• Coquitlam-Burke Mountain: Fin Donnelly 54% (BC NDP); Joan Isaacs 36% (BC Liberals); Adam Bremner-Akins 8% (BC Greens)

• Coquitlam-Maillardville: Selina Robinson 59%, (BC NDP); Will Davis 28% (BC Liberals); Nicola Spurling 11% (BC Greens)

• Port Coquitlam: Mike Farnworth 64% (BC NDP); Mehran Zargham 20% (BC Liberals); Erik Minty 12% (BC Greens); Lewis Clarke Dahlby 2% (Libertarian)

• Port Moody-Coquitlam: Rick Glumac 53% (BC NDP); James Robertson 30% (BC Liberals); John Latimer 11% (BC Greens); Brandon Fonseca (Conservative); Logan Smith 0.61% (Libertarian)

Farnworth, who held his seat for a seventh mandate, said he’s honoured to be re-elected. “I look forward to working within our diverse and experienced government caucus to deliver results for people in our communities,” he said in a press release.

Meanwhile, Premier John Horgan is set to announce cabinet positions today (Thursday).

In the last Parliament, Farnworth was the minister of public safety and Solicitor General, and government house leader while Robinson took on the role of municipal affairs and housing minister. Glumac served as the parliamentary secretary for technology.

Before their first provincial wins, the three politicians were city councillors.
