Sports coaches, environmental stewards and arts leaders who volunteer their time to make a difference in Port Coquitlam are eligible for a city award.

The municipality is calling for names for its annual volunteer recognition, held during National Volunteer Week in April; the deadline to submit is March 2.

Nominations are sought for the following seven categories:

• arts, heritage and cultural awareness;

• caring and safety;

• environmental protection and enhancement;

• sports and recreation;

• youth programs;

• U21;

• and lifetime volunteer.

Award candidates can be any age, don’t have to live in PoCo and can’t have won a previous volunteer recognition accolade (except for lifetime volunteer). The winners will receive a trophy and have their names added to the city honour roll.

“People volunteer for different reasons including wanting to help others and give back to their community,” said Coun. Nancy McCurrach, the council designate for arts, culture and heritage issues, in a news release. “As a past recipient of the caring and safety award, receiving a nomination is a great honour and a wonderful recognition.”

The 2019 award recipients were: Christine Malone (arts); Marija Shylov (caring); Teri Madaisky (environment); Dianne McPhee (sports); Dona Lawson (youth); Kiarra Murray (U21); and Linda Kozina (lifetime).
