ICBC customers can temporarily renew their vehicle insurance over the phone with an insurance broker during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you need to renew your car insurance but don’t want to leave the house during the COVID-19 pandemic, you should be OK.

But driver’s licence renewals are not covered by this temporary policy at this time.

ICBC and insurance brokers have made moves so British Columbians can access services they need without going to an insurance office.

Insurance brokers can temporarily conduct ICBC business, such as vehicle insurance renewals, by phone and email, according to a B.C. government press release Wednesday, although some brokers remain open for business for people who want to visit in person or for transactions that cannot be done over the phone, such as vehicle registrations and new policies.

According to the release, ICBC customers will be able to receive the following services from participating brokers:

• vehicle insurance renewal, cancellation and policy changes by phone;

• changes to storage policies and temporary operating permits;

• receive transactions by email and submit signatures electronically;

• and submit payments by phone.

It’s recommended ICBC customers give themselves extra time for renewals, as a transaction may take longer than usual. If you have any questions, contact ICBC at 250-978-8300 or toll-free at 1-800-950-1498.

As for driver’s licences, the release stated: “At this time, there are no changes to driver's licence renewal protocols but ICBC is working actively on further options across the board to support customers and employees. ICBC also continues to work closely with brokers through a joint task force on additional online services, including a more permanent process for insurance renewals.”
