Column: Who’s a good boy? Look at the cute puppy (names)

This is not about COVID-19: A pet insurance company sent The Tri-City News a list of top puppy names for 2020. Who are we to judge?

These puppies are from the first litter to be born at the Police Dog Services Training Centre in 2020. It's unlikely there will be a Luna or Bella in the bunch.

It’s a standard public relations ploy: A press release pops into the newsroom inbox touting National Cookie Day or International Cheese Week or something — hmmm, all the examples I could think of were food-related — and containing the results of some survey that helps promote a brand.

Usually, we delete and move on with our lives.

But today — today! — Trupanion, a company that provides medical insurance for pets, came through with press release containing a little non-COVID-19 content we can all use in these trying times.

“Hello!” it begins.

“Monday is National Puppy Day and it couldn’t have come at a better time! Having a pet in your life is believed to, among other things, reduce stress and improve overall health and well-being.”

So far, so good. The release goes on to quote some research from something called the Human Animal Bond Research Institute, blah, blah, blah… and continues: So take the time and celebrate your puppy (or other favourite pet) today and be thankful for all the goodness they bring into your life.”

Our soon-to-be close personal friends at Trupanion — “the leader in medical insurance for pets” — then said they “combed through [their] database of more than 600,000 insured pets and compiled the top 10 puppy names for 2020.”

How could we say no?

So here they are, from a pet insurance company, the top 10 puppy names for 2020:

1. Luna

2. Bella

3. Charlie

4. Cooper

5. Lucy

6. Daisy

7. Max

8. Rosie

9. Teddy

10. Molly

You’re welcome, quarantine people.

Woof.
