Driving on B.C. highways can be perilous at the best of times.
Just ask anyone who has done that white-knuckle trip on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, where young and dumb dudes impatiently zig-zag through traffic at high speeds.
But during the summer, when there are more lumbering RVs on the road, things get much more dangerous. Add in a long weekend – like the one coming up – and things get downright deadly.
I get it. It’s hot out and you just want to get to that campsite, but you’re frustrated driving behind a slow vehicle so you made choices that aren’t smart.
That’s why the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure issued a list of safety tips on the eve of a long weekend.
The include:
* allowing additional time to get to your destination due to more people on the roads;
* packing food and bottled water for passengers, as well as pets, and planning breaks at rest areas: https://www.th.gov.bc.ca/restareas/
* leaving the phone alone and wearing seatbelts;
* obeying all posted speed limits and slowing down in bad weather;
* driving with extra caution, watching for motorcyclists, and sharing the road with cyclists and other users; and
* making sure your vehicle is up for the drive by checking engine oil, washer fluid, lights and tires, including the spare.
