Another six-storey apartment block is slated to rise in downtown Port Coquitlam.

Tuesday, committee of council granted a development permit for George (Guangping) Du to build a 33-unit complex at 2387/2399 Atkins Ave., west of Shaughnessy Street and south of Wilson Avenue.

Two older single-family homes will be torn down to make way for the new condo block.

The application won’t go before council for formal approval nor will there be a public hearing as the site is already zoned for Residential Apartment, according to a city staff report; the land is also within the official community plan’s designation for high density.

Ten units will be “adaptable” — built to accommodate future tenants with accessibility challenges — while 12 will be considered “family friendly,” the report states.

Last October, city council adopted a new Affordable and Family Friendly Housing Policy to ensure all new multi-family housing complexes have at least 25% of the units for families and at least 5% be three-bedroom units.
