The Coquitlam Adanacs started their quest for the Minto Cup national junior lacrosse championship with a bang.

The Adanacs scored 10 times in the first period and coasted to a 16-1 win over the Calgary Mountaineers in the opening game of the four-team tournament.

Colin Munro opened the onslaught just 22 seconds into the game. John Hofseth then scored what would be the game winner 24 seconds later, and the Adanacs were off and running.

They added four more goals in the second period and two in the third.

Jake Foster was the only Mountaineer to beat Coquitlam keeper Christian Del Bianco, but by the then the Adanacs already had a 7-0 lead.

Larson Sundown and Chase Scanlan each had seven points to lead Coquitlam’s offence, while John Hofseth and Dennon Armstrong had five points.

The Adanacs fired 61 shots at Calgary’s goalies, Laine Hruska and Zachary Yopek-Stabel. Del Bianco faced 27 shots in Coquitlam’s net while backup Nate Facing stopped three more in the nearly nine minutes he played.

In the day’s other game, the Ontario champion Bramptom Excelsiors defeated the Okotoks Raiders, 25-8.

The Adanacs play the Raiders in Friday’s late game, then meet Brampton on Saturday afternoon.

The team that finishes atop the standings after the elimination round will get a bye into the best-of-five championship series that they’ll play against the winner of a semi final game between the teams that finish second and third.
