Coquitlam’s Marcello Polisi made his only shot on net count, as the Simon Fraser University Clan captain scored his second goal of the season Thursday against Western Washington University in Bellingham.

Unfortunately, it was the Clan’s only shot on net and only goal in a 2-1 upset by the host Vikings that ends SFU’s 16-game winning streak.

The Vikings scored in the 26th and 70th minutes before Polisi connected on a shot to the far post from about 22 yards out in the 83rd minutes. It was too little too late.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Clan coach Clint Schneider of the result. “We need to be better down the stretch.”

That stretch takes them Billings, Mont., on Saturday, where SFU will close out their regular season schedule with an afternoon match against the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets.

The Clan, who’ve already clinched the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship and are the No. 1 ranked team in the NCAA Div II, will then await to learn their fate in the national championship tournament draw on Monday.

Women's season ends in Portland

A late goal by Western Washington’s Emily Bunnell with less than eight minutes left until full time ended the season for the SFU Clan women’s soccer team, in their 2-1 loss in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference semifinal Thursday in Portland, Ore.

The winning goal came less than two minutes after Clan senior midfielder Samantha Donald scored just her second goal of her college career when she kicked home a rebound to tie the match 1-1.

The Vikings had opened the scoring in the 49th minute when freshman Clan keeper Nicole Anderson couldn’t reach a chip shot that sailed into the upper right corner of the SFU goal.
