Nwabuko leads Clan women to win

Riverside grad Ozioma Nwabuko scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Simon Fraser University Clan women’s basketball team to a 79-69 win over Central Washington University in Burnaby on Thursday.

Nwabuko scored 11 of her points in the third quarter, as SFU turned a one-point deficit at halftime into a three-point advantage heading into the final period.

“Ozi had her best game of the season,” said Clan coach Bruce Langford of the sophomore from Port Coquitlam. “I’m very pleased with our girls. We had energy, especially on the offensive boards.”

Coqutlam’s Kendal Sands pitched in 12 points and five assists, including a three-pointer, three free throws and a jumper late in the first half to keep the Clan close.

The win moved SFU into a tie with Central Washington for third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Both teams have six wins and three losses.

The Clan host the top team in the conference, the undefeated Northwest Nazarene University Nighthawks, on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. in the West Gym at SFU.

Men lose

The Clan men’s team lost the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, 74-53, on Thursday at SFU.

It was the team’s seventh loss of the season, against only two wins.

Coquitlam’s Graham Miller got back in the lineup  after missing two games. He scored two points in seven minutes of playing time.

SFU hosts the University of Alaska Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the back end of a doubleheader with the women’s game.
